15 Professional Invoice Design Tips That Improve Payment Speed
Typography, hierarchy, colour and whitespace choices that make an invoice easier to read, approve and pay.

Hierarchy first
- Make the amount due the largest number on the page.
- Put the due date directly beside it.
- Keep the invoice number top-right where AP teams look first.
- Limit yourself to two type sizes for body content.
- Right-align every numeric column.
Colour and brand
- Use one accent colour, applied to the header and totals only.
- Ensure text stays legible when printed in greyscale.
- Keep the logo under 60px tall — it is not the hero.
- Avoid background images behind text.
- Test contrast: light grey on white fails for many readers.
Layout
- Give the item table room to breathe with 10–12px row padding.
- Use subtle row separators instead of heavy borders.
- Keep payment instructions in a bordered block so they are scannable.
- Never let a table split awkwardly across pages.
- Leave a signature area only if your clients actually require one.
All fifteen principles are baked into our ten invoice templates.
