Small Business Saturday 2026 falls on November 28, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It is the one day of the holiday weekend built around independent businesses, which makes it a natural moment to bring in new customers, sell gift cards and fill January bookings. The businesses that do best treat it as a short campaign rather than a single sale: they plan the offer in early November, tell existing customers first, and make it easy to buy and pay on the day.

This guide gives you promotion ideas for shops and service businesses, a four-week plan, the math to check an offer before you run it, and how to handle gift certificates and deposits on your invoices.

If you run a service business, our companion guide to Black Friday ideas for service businesses covers offers that work without physical products.

Small Business Saturday promotion ideas

For retail shops and makers

  • Gift-with-purchase: a small, high-perceived-value item with purchases over a set amount.
  • Doorbuster bundles: two or three slow-moving items packaged as a gift set at a modest saving.
  • First-hour perks: free coffee, a tote bag or a raffle entry for the first 25 customers.
  • Neighborhood passport: partner with five nearby shops; customers who get stamps from all of them enter a prize draw.
  • Local maker pop-up: invite a complementary maker to sell in your space and promote it to both audiences.

For service businesses

  • Bonus gift certificates: buy a $100 certificate, get a $20 bonus voucher valid in January and February.
  • Prepaid packages: five sessions for the price of four, valid for six months.
  • January booking deals: book and pay a deposit on Saturday for a January appointment at this year's price.
  • Memberships: launch or discount the first month of a recurring plan; a points card or a members-only price can keep new customers coming back.
  • Free add-on: a free upgrade with any booking made over the weekend, such as a free deep-clean add-on or extra edited photos.

Community and goodwill ideas

  • Donate a percentage of Saturday sales to a local charity, then carry it into Giving Tuesday.
  • Host a toy, coat or food drive with a small thank-you discount for donors.
  • Feature other local businesses on your social channels and ask them to return the favor.

Four-week plan: how to promote Small Business Saturday

  1. Week of November 2: choose the offer. Check margins, set limits and write the terms.
  2. Week of November 9: prepare. Print signage, create gift certificates, set up online checkout, update your Google Business Profile with a post and holiday hours.
  3. Week of November 16: announce. Email your list, post on social media, put a sign in the window and tell every customer at checkout.
  4. Week of November 23: remind. Send a reminder on Wednesday, an early-access email on Black Friday and a "today only" message Saturday morning.
  5. After the weekend: thank buyers, follow up gift certificate buyers in January, and record what sold.

Your existing customers are your cheapest audience. A short email to past clients usually outperforms paid ads for a one-day local promotion.

Check the math before you discount

A discount comes straight out of gross margin. If your gross margin is 50%, a 20% discount means you must sell two-thirds more units just to make the same gross profit. Compare offers before choosing.

Offer on a $100 sale (50% gross margin)RevenueCost of goodsGross profit
No offer$100$50$50
20% off$80$50$30
Gift worth $8 at cost with purchase$100$58$42
$20 bonus voucher for January (assume 60% redeemed, half the voucher value is cost)$100$56$44

The gift-with-purchase and bonus voucher keep more profit than a straight discount and give the customer a reason to come back. If you do discount, apply it clearly on the receipt or invoice; our guide to showing a discount on an invoice explains how.

Worked example: a salon's Small Business Saturday campaign

A three-chair salon sells $100 gift certificates with a $20 January bonus voucher, and prepaid five-blowout packages for $200 (normally $250). Figures are illustrative.

ItemUnits soldCash received
$100 gift certificates48$4,800
Blowout packages at $20014$2,800
Retail products, in store-$1,150
Total cash in on the weekend$8,750

The salon does not count the $7,600 from certificates and packages as earned revenue yet. Under accrual accounting it is a liability until services are delivered, and even on a cash basis the owner tracks it so January staffing matches demand. The real payoff comes later: about a third of certificate recipients in past years were new clients, and the salon books many of them for repeat visits. That is where customer lifetime value matters more than the weekend's sales total.

Gift certificates, deposits and invoices

A few rules keep your records clean:

  • Number every gift certificate and log the buyer, value, date and any bonus voucher. Our gift certificate template includes a number field.
  • Sales tax: in most states, selling a gift card is not a taxable sale; tax is charged when it is redeemed for taxable goods or services.
  • Expiry rules: federal rules generally bar gift cards from expiring within five years, and many states are stricter.
  • Corporate orders: businesses buying gift certificates for staff or clients often need an invoice. Send one with the quantity, certificate numbers and payment terms from our free invoice generator.
  • Deposits for January bookings: issue a deposit invoice or receipt that states the service, date and whether the deposit is refundable.

Taking payments smoothly on a busy day

The busiest hour of the year is the wrong time for a card reader to fail. A week before, test every device, charge spare batteries, and make sure staff know how to process gift certificate sales, split payments and refunds. Have a backup: a phone-based card reader app or a payment link you can text to a customer if the main terminal goes down. Our guide to card readers for small business compares the common options.

Set up checkout so it captures what you need for follow-up: email address for the receipt, a box to join your list, and a note of which offer the customer used. That data tells you next year which offers worked and gives you a list to invite back in January.

Small Business Saturday for online and home-based businesses

You do not need a storefront to take part. Home-based makers can join a local holiday market or partner with a shop that hosts pop-ups for the day. Online businesses can run a Saturday-only offer for local customers, such as free local delivery or curbside pickup, and promote it in neighborhood groups. Service providers who work from home can sell gift certificates and prepaid packages entirely online, then email a printable certificate the buyer can wrap.

Common Small Business Saturday mistakes

  • Starting promotion on the day. Customers plan their weekend in advance.
  • Discounting too deeply and attracting only one-time bargain hunters.
  • Not collecting contact details. Ask buyers to join your email list so you can reach them again.
  • Vague terms. State expiry, exclusions and limits on bonus vouchers clearly.
  • Understaffing. A long line on the busiest day wastes the traffic you worked for.
  • Forgetting online buyers. Let people buy gift certificates online for those who cannot visit.

Measuring whether the day was worth it

Judge the campaign on more than Saturday's till. Compare the weekend with the same weekend last year and with an ordinary November Saturday. Then track three numbers into the new year: how many new customers you gained, how many gift certificates were redeemed by January 31 and how many of those visitors came back a second time. A campaign that broke even on the day but brought in 30 new regular customers was a success, while a record sales day made up mostly of deep discounts to existing customers may have just moved December revenue into November.

After the weekend: turning shoppers into regulars

Send a thank-you message within 48 hours, with a small reason to return in December. In January, remind certificate buyers and recipients that bonus vouchers are waiting. Review which offers sold, what you ran out of and where customers heard about you, and write it down for next year. Ask happy new customers for a review while the visit is fresh; our review request templates have short messages you can send.

Frequently asked questions

When is Small Business Saturday 2026?

Small Business Saturday 2026 is on Saturday, November 28. It always falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In 2026 the surrounding dates are Thanksgiving on November 26, Black Friday on November 27, Cyber Monday on November 30 and Giving Tuesday on December 1, so many small businesses plan one promotion that runs across the whole weekend.

Who started Small Business Saturday?

American Express started Small Business Saturday in 2010 to encourage people to shop at independent local businesses during the holiday season, and the name is a registered trademark of American Express. Local governments, chambers of commerce, business associations and the US Small Business Administration have promoted it over the years. You do not need to accept American Express cards to take part, although some Amex offers apply only to card purchases.

Do I have to register to participate in Small Business Saturday?

No registration is required to run your own Small Business Saturday promotion. American Express has offered free marketing materials and a Shop Small Map listing for eligible merchants that accept its cards, and some card offers depend on being on that map. Check the Shop Small site each autumn for that year's program details, as offers and eligibility change from year to year.

Can service businesses take part in Small Business Saturday?

Yes. Service businesses can sell gift certificates, prepaid service packages, memberships or bookings for January at a holiday price. Salons, cleaners, photographers, trainers, repair shops and consultants all do well with prepaid offers. A gift certificate gives a customer something to give, brings you cash in a slow week, and introduces a new customer when it is redeemed.

What discount should I offer on Small Business Saturday?

Offer the smallest incentive that still feels special, and check your margin first. Many small businesses do better with a gift-with-purchase, a bonus gift card value or a limited bundle than with a deep sitewide discount. For example, a $100 gift card sold with a $20 bonus voucher for January costs you less than 20% off everything, because many bonus vouchers are redeemed alongside full-price purchases.

Do gift cards sold on Small Business Saturday expire?

Under federal law, most retail gift cards and gift certificates cannot expire within five years of the date they were issued or last loaded, and inactivity fees are restricted. Many states go further and ban expiration dates entirely. Promotional bonus vouchers given for free can often have shorter expiry dates if clearly disclosed, but check your state's rules before printing terms.
