PSID: How to Pay FBR Tax Online and Get Your CPR
How to generate a PSID in IRIS, pay FBR tax online through 1Link banking apps, ATMs or a branch, and download your CPR, with common errors and how to fix them.
Quick answer: A PSID (Payment Slip ID) is a number you generate in FBR's IRIS portal for one tax payment. Log in to IRIS, open e-payments, create a payment, choose the tax type, period and amount, and save. Pay the slip through your bank's app, internet banking, an ATM or a branch, then download the CPR as proof.
Paying tax in Pakistan used to mean filling a paper challan and queuing at a designated bank branch. Today almost every federal tax payment, from advance income tax to sales tax and withholding deposits, runs through a payment slip ID generated online. This guide explains how to generate one, how to pay FBR tax online through 1Link banking apps and other channels, what the CPR is and why you must keep it, and how to fix the problems people run into most.
Important: This is general information, not tax advice. FBR's screens and menu names change from time to time. Follow the current instructions in IRIS and check with a tax practitioner if you are unsure which tax head or section to use.
What is a PSID and how does it fit with the CPR?
A PSID is a unique ID for one payment. It ties together who is paying, which tax, which period and how much. Banks do not need to know any of that detail; they read it from the ID. Once you pay, FBR issues a Computerized Payment Receipt, or CPR, which is the legal proof of payment.
| Term | What it is | When you get it | What you use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment slip ID | A unique number for one pending payment | When you save a payment form in IRIS or FBR e-payments | Telling the bank or app what you are paying |
| CPR (Computerized Payment Receipt) | FBR's receipt for a completed payment | After the bank confirms payment | Proof of payment, entered in returns and statements |
| Paper challan | The older manual payment form | Largely replaced by online slips | Rarely needed now; ask your bank if it still accepts one |
In late 2024 FBR moved payment creation inside IRIS itself, a system it called ePayment 2.0. Before that, taxpayers had to switch to a separate e-payment website. FBR describes the current flow as three steps: generate the slip, pay through alternative delivery channels such as internet banking, ATMs and mobile banking, and receive the CPR, which it says is issued in real time and also sent by email and SMS. The system covers income tax, sales tax, federal excise duty and withholding taxes, and it is open to registered and unregistered taxpayers.
Before you start: what you need
- IRIS login (your CNIC or NTN and password). If you are not registered, see our guide on how to get an NTN in Pakistan.
- The tax type and section you are paying, for example income tax payable with your return, advance tax, or a withholding deposit under a specific section.
- The tax period, such as the tax year for income tax or the month for sales tax.
- The exact amount. Work it out first. For withholding deposits, use the totals from your records and the current rates in our withholding tax rates guide for 2026-27.
- A bank account with online banking or access to a bank branch or ATM that accepts FBR payments.
How to generate PSID in IRIS: step by step
- Log in to IRIS. Use the official FBR IRIS portal only.
- Open the e-payment section. Look for the payments or e-payment menu and choose the option to create a new payment.
- Choose the tax type. Select income tax, sales tax, federal excise or withholding tax.
- Select the payment section. For income tax this could be the tax payable with your return, advance tax, or a demand raised by FBR. For withholding deposits, pick the section under which you deducted tax, such as section 149 for salaries or section 153 for supplier payments.
- Enter the period. Choose the tax year or month the payment relates to.
- Enter the amount and, for withholding, the breakdown if the form asks for it.
- Review and save. IRIS shows the payment slip with its ID number, your details, the tax head and the amount.
- Print or save the slip as a PDF, or copy the number. You will enter it in your banking app.
Unregistered persons who only need to pay a one-off amount, such as advance tax on a property or vehicle transaction, can create a slip through FBR's e-payment service using their CNIC. Regular business taxpayers should always use IRIS so the payment links to their NTN.
How to pay FBR tax online with your PSID
Once you have the slip, you can pay it through several channels. The menu names vary between banks, so treat the paths below as typical rather than exact.
Mobile banking app or internet banking (1Link)
- Log in to your bank's app or internet banking.
- Open bill payments, government payments or tax payments, and select FBR or "FBR PSID".
- Enter the payment slip ID. The app fetches the taxpayer name and the amount.
- Check the name, NTN or CNIC and amount carefully, then confirm with your PIN or OTP.
- Save the bank's transaction receipt. Then look for the CPR in your email, SMS or IRIS.
Most banks on the 1Link network support this. Some branchless banking wallets also do, but check limits before paying large amounts. For other ways to move business money in Pakistan, see our guide to Raast business payments.
ATM
Some bank ATMs offer a bill payment or FBR option where you enter the slip number and confirm the amount. Keep the ATM slip until the CPR appears.
Bank branch
Many branches still accept FBR payments over the counter. Take the printed slip and pay from your account or in cash, depending on the bank's rules. Ask for the bank's stamped receipt.
Getting and checking your CPR
The CPR is the document that matters. FBR says it is issued in real time and sent by email and SMS, and you can find it later in IRIS under your payment history. To check a payment, IRIS also has an online verification option where you can search by PSID or CPR number.
Save each CPR as a PDF in a folder by tax year, with a filename like "2027-IT-advance-Q2-CPR.pdf". When you file your income tax return in IRIS, you will enter the CPR numbers for tax you paid yourself, so having them in one place saves a lot of time.
Worked example: depositing withholding tax for a month
Bilal runs a small digital agency registered as a company in Karachi. In September he pays three suppliers and must deposit the tax he withheld.
| Supplier | Gross invoice (PKR) | Category | ATL rate | Tax withheld (PKR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting company | 200,000 | IT services | 4% | 8,000 |
| Freelance lawyer | 100,000 | Independent professional | 15% | 15,000 |
| Office cleaning firm | 60,000 | Other services | 14% | 8,400 |
| Total to deposit | 31,400 | |||
Bilal generates a payment slip in IRIS for withholding tax under section 153 for the right period, enters PKR 31,400 (or splits it by sub-section if the form requires), pays it in his bank app, and saves the CPR. He quotes that CPR in his withholding statement so each supplier gets credit. Rates are from FBR's tax year 2027 card for suppliers on the Active Taxpayer List; a non-filer would have been deducted at double.
Timing, deadlines and record keeping
The payment date that counts is the date on the CPR, not the date you created the slip. A slip generated on the due date but paid the next morning is a late payment. Build a margin into your routine.
- Pay two or three working days early. Bank systems, OTP delays and app outages are common near month end and around return deadlines.
- Create a fresh slip each time. Do not reuse an old printout; amounts and periods differ, and old slips expire.
- Keep three documents per payment: the slip, the bank's transaction receipt and the CPR. If FBR ever questions a payment, the bank receipt proves the debit and the CPR proves the credit.
- Match each CPR to its source. For withholding deposits, note which supplier invoices the amount covers. For sales tax, note the return period.
- Diarise recurring payments. Advance tax instalments, monthly sales tax and withholding deposits each follow their own calendar. A simple spreadsheet with due date, amount, slip number and CPR number is enough for most small businesses.
Accountants who pay on behalf of several clients should keep a separate folder per client and per tax year, and send each client a copy of the CPR the same day. The receipt belongs to the taxpayer named on it, whoever actually pressed the pay button.
Finally, reconcile once a month. Compare the CPRs in IRIS with your bank statement and your own payment log. A missing receipt is far easier to chase within a few days of payment than months later, when you are filing a return and the bank's records have moved to an archive.
Common PSID problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| App says the slip is invalid or not found | Typing error, or the slip has expired | Re-check the number; if expired, generate a new one in IRIS |
| Wrong amount on the slip | Typo when creating it | Do not pay it; create a new slip with the right amount |
| Paid under the wrong tax year or section | Wrong selection in the form | Contact FBR or your tax office about correcting the payment; keep both receipts |
| Bank debited but no CPR | Delay between bank and FBR systems | Check email, SMS and IRIS history; contact the bank with the transaction reference before paying again |
| Bank app has no FBR option | Bank or wallet does not support it | Use another 1Link bank, an ATM or a branch |
How tax payments connect to your invoicing
For a small business, the amounts you deposit come straight from your sales and purchase records. Sales tax is calculated from the invoices you issue, and withholding deposits come from the supplier invoices you pay. If you are registered for sales tax, your invoices also need to meet FBR's digital invoicing rules; see our FBR e-invoicing guide and the STRN registration guide.
For businesses not yet on integrated e-invoicing, our free Pakistan invoice generator creates clear PDF invoices with your NTN, one tax rate, a PO number and amount paid and balance due fields. It does not generate a payment slip, connect to IRIS, or file or pay tax for you; you still do those steps in IRIS and your bank. Freelancers should also read our freelancer tax guide for Pakistan.
Conclusion
Paying FBR is a three-part routine: create the PSID in IRIS, pay it through your bank, and file away the CPR. Do it a few days before any deadline so a bank delay does not make you late, and keep every receipt by tax year. If you are unsure which tax head or section to choose, ask a tax practitioner before you pay, because fixing a misallocated payment takes far longer than getting it right first time. When your next client invoice is due, build it in our free invoice generator.
Frequently asked questions
What is a PSID in FBR?
PSID stands for Payment Slip ID. It is a unique number generated in FBR's IRIS portal, or through FBR's e-payment service for unregistered persons, that identifies one specific tax payment: the taxpayer, tax type, period and amount. You give the number to your bank, app or ATM, which pulls up the details and lets you pay. After payment FBR issues a Computerized Payment Receipt (CPR) as proof that the tax reached the government.
How do I generate a PSID in IRIS?
Log in to IRIS, open the e-payment section and choose to create a new payment. Select the tax type, such as income tax, sales tax or withholding tax, then the payment section, tax period and amount. Check your registration number and details, save the form and IRIS generates the payment slip ID. Print it or note the number, then pay it through internet banking, a mobile banking app, an ATM or a bank branch.
What is a CPR in FBR?
A CPR, or Computerized Payment Receipt, is FBR's official proof that a tax payment was received. Each paid PSID produces a CPR with its own number, the payment date and amount. You quote the CPR number in returns and withholding statements so FBR can match the payment to your liability. FBR says the CPR is issued in real time after payment and is sent by email and SMS, and it stays available in IRIS.
Which banks and apps can pay FBR PSID?
Most Pakistani banks connected to the 1Link network let you pay a PSID through internet banking or a mobile banking app, usually under bill payments, government payments or a dedicated FBR option. FBR also lists ATMs and branch counters as channels. The exact menu name differs between banks and some branchless banking wallets also support it. If you cannot find the option, ask your bank whether it accepts FBR payment slip IDs.
How long is an FBR PSID valid?
A PSID is valid for a limited time and the expiry date is shown on the slip. FBR has not published a single fixed period in the guidance we checked, so read the slip before you pay. If it has expired, or if you need to change the amount or tax period, simply generate a new one in IRIS. An unpaid expired PSID does not create a liability or a penalty by itself.
Can I pay FBR tax without an NTN?
Yes. FBR's e-payment system supports both registered and unregistered persons, so you can create a payment slip ID using your CNIC for transactions such as advance tax on property or vehicles. That said, regular business taxpayers should register in IRIS so payments link to their NTN automatically and appear against the correct return and tax year. Registration is free and takes little time online.
My payment went through but the CPR is not showing. What should I do?
First check your email and SMS, because FBR sends CPR details there. Then search your payment history in IRIS and use the online verification option for PSID or CPR. If the bank debited your account but nothing appears after a working day or so, contact your bank with the transaction reference, then raise the issue with FBR's helpline. Do not pay again until you have confirmed the first payment failed.
Can I pay someone else's tax through my bank app?
Generally yes. The PSID carries the taxpayer's details, so the payment is credited to the person named on the slip, not to the bank account holder. Accountants and family members often pay this way. Check the name, NTN or CNIC and the amount shown in the app before confirming, because correcting a payment made against the wrong slip is slow and may need a request to FBR.
Do I need the CPR number when filing my income tax return?
Yes, for tax you paid yourself. When you file your return in IRIS, payments made with the return or as advance tax are entered using their CPR numbers so FBR can match them. Withholding deducted by others normally appears from the agents' statements instead. Keep every CPR in a folder by tax year so you can complete your return quickly and answer any notice that questions a payment.
